Go Painters will start the Village's 2025 Fire Hydrant painting Project on July 17th. The Village has entered into a three-year agreement with Go Painters to paint all the Village-owned fire hydrants. This year's project involves painting 400 hydrants throughout the Village. After the hydrants are painted, a colored reflective band will be applied to each hydrant to meet the mandates of the Insurance Services Office (ISO).
What is ISO?
ISO surveys and analyzes fire departments and public water utilities using its Fire Suppression Rating Schedule to evaluate factors such as department preparedness, water supply, and emergency communications. The reflective bands applied to the hydrant have different colors. The colors are used to indicate the flow rate that a hydrant can provide. The reflective band on each hydrant is labeled with its respective gallon-per-minute (GPM) flow rate:
- Blue (1,500 GPM or greater)
- Green (1,000 – 1,499GPM)
- Orange (500-999GPM)
- Red (less than 500GPM)
This flow indicates the volume of water the Fire Department has to fight a fire.
Scope of Work
- Prepare and protect work areas surrounding the fire hydrant.
- Sandblast the paint off the fire hydrant per the SSPC-SP6/NACE 3 Commercial Blast Cleaning requirements.
- Apply one full coat of SW MACROPOXY 646 UNIVERSAL METAL PRIMER to the fire hydrant. This primer color is typically pink.
- Apply a topcoat of SW Acrolon 218HS (safety color red) paint to the fire hydrant.
